Of Lockdown and All It's Other Unfinished Inmates

*Sigh*
It's been a while since I jotted down my thoughts on this blog, and by a while I mean years. I don't want to count them because I would probably start crying but I have had my reasons. The most significant one being that I became a MOTHER! Yes you heard right, I am responsible for another human being that is not me. And in the spirit of keeping my life compartmentalized, I started a mommy blog where I have been doing most of my writing. You are free to check it out here. Anyway back to my long awaited return. I am back because (yes you guessed it) we are facing a pandemic. I am of course referring to covid-19. Figures that the thing to bring me back to this blog would be a life threatening pandemic, I have always been dramatic like that.

So yes, covid-19... It's Day 29 of the national lockdown (Botswana) and I have finally reached my breaking point. Let me break it down. I am fortunate to be one of those people who are still employed during this difficult time and I am working from home. The first 2 weeks were bliss! Working from home has always been one of my dreams. You get to set your own hours, work around your productivity, blah, blah, blah. But alas, all good things must come to an end. By the wend of week 2 my momentum had dwindled. Dragging myself from bed every morning became unbearable. I miss the office gossip, the lunch hours where you could go window shopping, the little things you know. But I still soldiered on (still am).

I also used this (lockdown) opportunity to try to write more. My creativity had been drying up and it needed a little boost. So I started a 'Lockdown Poetry' group with some of my poet friends and acquaintances with the hope that I would feel more inspired. My newfound inspiration lasted a whole week and a half and it died. Are you sensing a pattern here? Not yet? Okay I will continue. Still inspired by this 'free time' I decided to take up yoga, you know for relaxing and flexibility and if we are being honest, cool instagram pictures. I have only done it three times in the past 29 days. Is the pattern getting clearer now? I am the queen of unfinished projects, just ask all the short stories I have published. Nevertheless I am proud of myself for trying to be productive. It might not have worked out but it did keep me busy. And who knows, I might just finish what I started because 3 more weeks have been added to the lockdown. Yaaay! More time to try out new things and never finish them. I think I will try out Spanish lessons and baking next. I know this is a short entry but I am easing my way into it. Hopefully this will not be one of my many unfinished projects.

How are you coping with the current situation? I really would like to know.

P.S. It feels good to be back, I missed y'all.

Cancelled!

Have you ever been excited to share with a friend a new project, be it a movie, song, TED Talk, etc by your favourite celebrity only to be shut down by said friend because we have 'cancelled' the person? Saaaame! I remember a few weeks back one of my friends was super excited about this new Tyler Perry movie and I had to educate her real quick about how we had cancelled him. She was obviously not happy. But this new habit, often referred to as cancel culture is becoming increasingly popular. With the COVID19 lockdowns in several countries, people had so much time on their hands that they started scrutinizing their love for celebrities which resulted in many of them being cancelled .  So what is cancel culture ? This refers to the practice of withdrawing support for public figures and companies after they have done or said something considered to e objectionable or offensive. It usually happens on social media, specifically Twitter where users are ready with receipts to prove ...

Giving Up

Last week I was presented with the opportunity of a lifetime, applying to the biggest financial institution in the world for a summer internship. The process was long and tedious and mentally exhausting that I decided to take the easy way out. After two full hours of filling the online application form I gave up on the very last task I had to complete. And now I will never know if I would have gotten in or not. Often in life we are faced with challenges that literally drain the lives out of us and we give up. It's not something to be proud of but it is the easy way out and I agree. But if everything in life was easy then we really would not have much appreciation for it. A hard earned C is so much more fulfilling than an easy A. We feel much more accomplished when we have overcome an obstacle. Sure giving up is much easier to handle, you don't have to face rejection or failure. And failure is such a hard pill to swallow but once in a while you have to fail to learn how to succe...

Growing Up

I recently reached a very important stage in my life; turning 21! Yep, I am pretty old I know. So 21, everyone looks forward to this big moment in their life. It's when the whole world recognises you as an adult! You are finally free to do whatever you want. It's like being given a canvas and paint and painting the picture that is the rest of your life. A pretty exciting moment right? wrong! Well at least for me anyway. I mean at first I was psyched, I was finally 21. What could go wrong? And then I sat down and thought, I am 21. I am in my 20s and I have nothing to show for it. Over two decades I have been on earth and I hadn't even finished school yet! It was a nightmare. My friend called it an 'early mid-life crisis'. Of  course right now I am feeling a lot better about the whole thing, I mean I am still freaking out just a little bit but I will be ok. The point I am trying to make is even though growing up is great and everything, it can also be scary. The older...
